The university is based on two campuses in the cities of León and Ponferrada in northern Spain, and hosts more than 16,000 students. The former Prime Minister of Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, was a lecturer at the university in the 1980s, before beginning his political career.

BILGI community includes more than students; it also includes faculty, alumni, families, employers and neighboring communities where BILGI is located.
Being part of Laureate International Universities network, the founding premise of BILGI has become ‘to make education more accessible and affordable so that more students can pursue their dreams’. BILGI seeks to educate free-thinking, creative, intellectually curious and enterprising individuals who will contribute to a world in which knowledge is accessible to all and, indeed, in which access to it has come to be seen as a fundamental human right. BILGI holds a primary responsibility for providing, maintaining and further developing an academic environment in which both students and faculty members are able to engage in learning and the production of knowledge at the highest level.
Rongo University College is a public institution which was established by Excellency President Mwai Kibaki, Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defense Forces through Legal Notice NO.70, Kenya Gazette Supplement NO.51, on 17th June 2011. The University Campus is located on Kitere Hill, 8 kilometers from Rongo Town, and 2.5 kilometers off Kisii – Migori Highway. It is situated on the precincts of the former Moi Institute of Technology, (MIT), which began in 1981 as a technical training college for Certificate, Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes. The Degree and Diploma programmes that are on offer are strongly anchored on practical orientation through more contact hours of class work, field work and industrial attachment which is expected to give the students a more holistic understanding of the environment in which they operate. In so doing, Rongo University College aims at producing students that are capable of self-employment and job creation rather than relying on formal employment only. In addition, they will fit well in the job market and environment as graduates who are responsive to societal needs. This is in line with the Kenya Vision 2030 which emphasizes job creation and industrial growth through exploitation of national skills and human resources.
